What to Wear for Autumn Family Photos at Raeburn Orchard, Roleystone (Perth Hills)

The golden afternoon light, the stunning colours of the red and orange persimmon leaves, and that lovely crisp autumn feeling always create such special, warm family portraits.

To help your images feel cohesive, timeless and beautiful among the vibrant persimmon trees, here are my best tips on what to wear for your session at the orchard.

A few practical things to keep in mind

The walk down into the orchard is quite steep, so I recommend wearing comfortable shoes for the journey in and out. If you’d like to wear heels for the photos, just bring them with you and pop them on once you’re inside the orchard.

It can also get a little muddy down there, especially after rain, so keep that in mind when choosing footwear and clothing. Dressing in light layers is always a good idea too - the temperature can drop quickly once the sun starts to go down in the Perth Hills.

Choosing a colour palette

One of the easiest ways to create lovely, cohesive family photos is to choose a similar colour scheme for the whole family. You don’t need to match exactly - just stay within the same colour family so everything feels connected and harmonious.

I recommend picking 2–3 main colours and then using different shades and tones of those colours across everyone’s outfits. For example, if you love blue, you could mix navy, denim, and soft sky blue. Or start with one person’s outfit (often Mum’s or the littlest one’s) and build the rest of the family’s looks around it.

If you’re planning to display your photos at home, it can be nice to think about your existing décor colours so the images feel like they truly belong in your space.

Popular colour palettes for autumn family photos at Raeburn Orchard

These combinations work especially well with the rich red, orange and golden tones of the persimmon leaves:

• Soft neutrals -creams, whites, tans and beiges

• Navy and white (always fresh and timeless)

• White and denim (relaxed and easy)

• Rich autumn tones -reds, oranges, rusts, browns, mustards and olive greens

  
  

Of course you can choose whatever colours make you and your family happy - just try to keep them within your chosen 2–3 colour palette for the most beautiful, cohesive results.

What to avoid in family photos

It’s best to steer clear of large logos, writing, or character prints on clothing, as these can distract in photos and date quite quickly.

Patterns and textures, on the other hand, are wonderful! Think soft knits, corduroy, subtle florals, checks or cosy jumpers - they add lovely depth and interest to your images in the dappled light of the orchard.
